EU Entry/Exit System

Delivering secure and efficient borders for the Schengen Area

Europe remains the world’s leading travel destination. With this comes the dual challenge of preventing irregular migration while facilitating legitimate travel. To address these challenges, the European Commission has launched the Entry/Exit System (EES)—a unified framework that records the identity, biometrics, and border movements of third country nationals entering or leaving the Schengen Area.

From design to successful go-live

Now operational across land, air, and sea borders, EES strengthens security, modernizes border management, and represents a milestone in European travel regulation.

Its foundations were laid with the introduction of the shared Biometric Matching System (sBMS), operated together with the Visa Information System (VIS), by eu-LISA. VIS supports the EU’s common visa policy and border checks, and is being connected with other large-scale IT systems, including EES. Once interoperability is fully implemented, sBMS will be among the largest biometric systems in the world.

IDEMIA Public Security’s role

Rolling out EES requires more than central IT infrastructure. Each border environment demands tailored solutions—from automation and self-service tools to training, maintenance, and operational support—ensuring technology and services evolve together to keep borders secure, efficient, and traveler-friendly.

As a longstanding European partner in border management, IDEMIA Public Security has been supporting eu-LISA since its creation in 2012. In 2020, together with Sopra Steria, we were selected to build and operate sBMS, the cornerstone of EES, to help combat irregular migration and cross-border crime. In 2025, we successfully supported the go-live of eu-LISA’s new sBMS.
